Western Digital – $ 100.000+ – San Jose, CA

Description

As a team member of the Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) team within the Advanced Technology Organization, the candidate should be prepared to participate in program teams, collaborations, and engineering projects, and is expected to play an influential role in supporting the efforts of ally organizations including the hybrid, firmware and program management organizations.

An emphasis will be placed on the candidate’s skills and abilities in the areas of device physics, measurement and other areas to develop and utilize characterization tests and software towards proposing improved systems design and providing improved understanding of fundamentals and operation of solid state drive storage subsystems. The candidate will plan and execute characterization plans, NAND specs, features, command sequences, and NAND failure analysis for our Hybrid drive architecture. This position will require reading and understanding flash specs from multiple vendors and interpreting them to determine the best sequences to use.

The engineer will then need to apply his/her detail understanding of NAND flash physics, MLC technology and protocols to come up with algorithm for endurance and reliability improvement. He/she will work on the flash management system test plan for operation and drive NAND FA processes.

Functional integrity test knowledge is a plus although not required.

The candidate should also be skilled in software development. He/she will be responsible for algorithm and test development for NAND flash testing and at the system level. Working knowledge of firmware development and system level validation and/or testing is a definite plus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Work with cross-functional groups including the hybrid, HDD, firmware, reliability and program management. This includes predictions for life duration of NAND and/or other NVM technologies.

· Generate innovative ideas to extend NAND life and improve reliability. Generate IP and submit conference publications.

· Participate in external/university research; working with startup companies and/or academia to understand the fundamental limitations and develop better fundamental understanding of the NVM physics for various NVM technologies

Technical: Develop and/or utilize NVM (NAND and others) characterization for our NVM recording subsystems
Technical: Develop new characterization and data pre-/post-processing tools
Train other engineers in the use of the testing tools and equipment
Interface with the hybrid and program management teams to optimize performance and NAND/NVM lifetime
Contribute to NVM technology roadmaps for future products

· Provide support for HDD and Hybrid and other technologies of interest of the organization

· Communicate results in a timely manner and summarize for both subject matter experts and other job disciplines.
