Job Description (Role Profile) Product Designers represent the voice of the customer at Avid, and interact daily with the engineering development team as product owner. Product Designers are members of the Product Management team, and share responsibility for the success of their product line. The Director of Product Design is the functional manager of the group. Role summary: • Drive strategic vision to design efforts that focus on delivering delightful user experiences; create a link between the work of the team and the mission and values of the organization. • Partner with key stakeholders (e.g., PM, Engineering) to ensure that teams are appropriately staffed and operating effectively to efficiently produce highly usable/valuable/feasible products that delight our customers. • Partner with the UX Leadership team to grow the UX practice at Avid-Creative; develop the team to their full potential through training, coaching, and feedback. • Promote value of UX team as problem framers and strategic thinkers while creative product design synergies within the Artist Suite of products • Assist in the resource planning and budgeting for the team and products. • Product Designers work cross-functionally to bring to market Avid products, services and workflows that are innovative, reliable, integrated, and best of breed. Product Designers also work with customers and the 3rd party community, to insure that our priorities are our customer/partner’s priorities. The Director of product design must drive their team to: • Maintain a thorough understanding of our customers’ needs and bring the voice of the customer to the table as the primary rationale and argument for development priorities and decisions • Understand and communicate our customers end-to-end workflows and translate them into actionable product requirements to deliver features that enable, streamline and delight users with power, while hiding complexity • Using the customer’s voice, describe, prioritize, and communicate the requirements that really matter and be able to answer Engineering-team questions as they arise • Be comfortable “sitting on the fence,” looking outward to understand end-user needs and inward, to manage the stories and processes that transform those customer needs into high quality, supportable, manageable software • Act as an active stakeholder in the development team, and represent the product on behalf of the team when opportunities arise with customers, partners, and management • Be the spokesperson for product-team efforts in sprint reviews and technology demonstrations, and be able to express the value of our efforts from the customer perspective • Maintain a advanced knowledge of how Avid software is installed, deployed, and managed by our customers • Proactively manage the expectations and education of all product stakeholders, including but not limited to customers, partners, and internal functions, such as production support, service and sales by involving stakeholders regularly in story creation and validation, and sprint reviews • Understand how good software is developed, how high-functioning Engineering teams work, and how important quality and the related agile technical practices are to sustain a high velocity release cadence • Work with Product Management to manage products through Avid’s Product Lifecycle Management process, involving both strategic planning and tactical execution, and covering all stages, from initial product concept and definition, through implementation, release, and ultimately end of life planning Job Requirements: • 5+ years’ experience successfully applying a human-centered design approach to product development • 10+ years’ experience in mentoring and working with UX managers, including recruiting, developing, and retaining talented people • Demonstrated ability to bridge silos and work effectively across disciplines, locations, and levels • Expertise in both interaction design and user research • Experience with Agile software development processes • Deep understanding of UX best practices for web-based and mobile applications • Ability to craft and communicate compelling vision and story to multiple audiences • Strong leadership, coaching, and mentoring skills
