Lead Software Engineer – Thales e-Security

An outstanding opportunity has been created for a Lead Software Engineer to join the global number one provider of server-based cryptographic security systems.  At the Cambridge office of Thales e-Security, we provide a growing portfolio of both network-attached and embedded hardware security modules. Thales e-Security provides innovative solutions to real-world business problems, safeguarding the digital keys used in public-key infrastructure, code signing, database encryption, secure web and application servers.
Key Tasks
• You will provide strong technology/software engineering leadership in the project
• You will work with, guide and mentor software engineers in the development team
• You will contribute to software architecture and produce high-quality software designs, investigating and recommending industry standard and third-party technologies where appropriate
• Working in the development team, you will iterate your design based on evolving knowledge, ensuring that software design and the software implementation are aligned
• Working as part of the development team, you will implement components, ensuring the integrity and robustness of the project deliverables
• Identifying and highlighting technical risks, you will take ownership of technical issues and their resolution
• You will support Product Management, including attending occasional customer-facing meetings

Technical & Professional Skills
Qualifications
• Educated to degree level or equivalent, in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or other relevant discipline.
Knowledge
Essential
• Recent experience in a lead software engineer role
• Experience developing software from resource-constrained embedded, through to distributed and scalable systems
• Internet technologies, protocols and standards
• Detailed knowledge and experience of design and programming on a variety of platforms and environments including UNIX and Windows based operating systems
• Significant implementation experience of large projects, including use of multiple development languages (must include C and C++, may include  C#, Java or Python)
Desirable
• OpenStack, CloudStack and/or other components of the Apache cloud infrastructure ecosystem (Cassandra, Hadoop, ActiveMQ,…)
• Design and/or implementation experience in the following technology areas:
o Systems making complex use of Databases
o Web-based UI
o Embedded systems
o Cryptography and associated concepts in IT security, including security APIs such as PKCS#11, Microsoft CryptoAPI and OpenSSL
• An appreciation of relevant Quality (ISO9000) requirements and processes
• Experience working in an Agile development team

• The ability to analyse complex technical problems and offer innovative, reasoned and practical solutions to demanding requirements
• Good communication skills, with the ability to fluently convey complex designs at multiple levels of abstraction to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment and mentor/coach other team members
• The ability to prioritise, manage your own workload, be flexible, work under pressure and deliver to demanding deadlines
