Sr. Qualification Engineer (HDD/SSD)
As a Senior Qualification Engineer in the HDD/SSD Engineering Team, you will be responsible for leading the qualification of new Hard Disk and Solid State Disks within NetApp’s Data OnTap operating system environment.

This position requires experience qualifying enterprise-class devices in storage systems, a firm understanding of SAS and SATA protocols, strong hands-on debugging and analytical know-how. The candidate must also posses excellent communication skills, and the flexibility to work effectively with internal cross-functional teams, manufacturing partners and outside vendors.

The successful candidate is expect to be highly self-motivated, and have the ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced and very technical environment. They should have the mindset and tracking ability of a sleuth and the analytical skills of a scientist. You will be adept at framing complex information in a way that people understand.

This position requires an individual to be creative, team-oriented, technology savvy, driven to produce results.

Essential Functions:
– Your major responsibility will be to plan, lead and execute HDD/SSD device qualification test cycles.
– You will participate in any and/or all phases of the product development cycle from supplier selection through implementation, documentation, validation and support.
– Help define new HDD/SSD specific qualification tests that target new features, requirements, or issues seen in the field.
– Strong scripting language skills are highly desirable; for automating tests
– Must have strong knowledge/background in storage interface protocols (SAS and SATA) and be able to use standard analysis tools to narrow down issues
– Must be proficient in use of SAS/SATA Bus analyzers to setup and capture traces and be an expert at trace analysis.
– Analysis and review of system level power, cooling and timing.
– Must have a good background in Storage Appliances (storage OS, Raid, Storage HW)

To be successful an external candidate is expected to quickly develop strong Data OnTap know-how as well as:
– Linux/Windows driver/storage stack knowledge
– A good working knowledge of Flash technologies (MLC/SLC), controllers and FW, and failure modes
– C language and data analysis skills a plus
– Excellent verbal and written language/communication skills a must
– Provide guidance and mentoring to more junior engineers.
– As part of a small team, you will lead and participate in technical discussions within the immediate group and across functions, where evaluating and executing design and development plans for products are reviewed.
– A willingness to work on additional tasks and responsibilities that will positively contribute toward team, department, and company goals.

Requirements:
– Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.
– Experience in HDD/SSD design, qualification and development.
– A strong understanding of complex concepts related to architecture, design engineering, reliability, prototyping and failure analysis.
– Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment of engineers to meet aggressive goals and high quality standards.
– Ability to develop longer-range project plans and schedules for individual or work for a small team.

Education & Experience:
– Minimum of 7 years experience is required, 8 to 10 years of experience is preferred.
– A Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, a Master Degree, or a PhD; or equivalent experience is required.
– Demonstrated ability to have completed multiple, complex technical projects.
