As a Principal Engineer you will work as part of a team responsible for actively participating in driving product development and strategy. Principal Engineers participate in and may lead many aspects of technical projects. You will participate in and lead activities that include testing and debugging of operating systems that run NetApp storage applications. As part of the Research and Development function, the overall focus of the group is on competitive market and customer requirements, technology advances, product quality, product cost and time-to-market. Software engineers focus on enhancements to existing products as well as new product development.

This position requires an individual to be creative, team-oriented, technology savvy, able to lead large cross-functional teams, and driven to produce results.

Essential Functions:
– Lead the design, architecture, verification and release of systems or major subsystems
– Participate and lead technical phases of the product development cycle from product definition and design, through implementation including:
– Testing
– Designing
– Test automation
– Debugging
– Reliability
– Performance analysis
– Critical and/or high visibility customer support
– Understand implications of new technology and how it can be applied to product design and product evolution
– Work on architecture, design and product definition that leads and influences decisions and outcomes related to project direction
– As part of a team, act as a technical advisor and resource to other engineers and across functions across Business Units
– Work with suppliers, partners or other external parties in product design efforts
– Define new products and contribute to new architectures, usually within an established strategic direction
– Define work required to design, implement and test new products. Identifies problems well in advance and proposes solutions
– Assigned the most complex and critical design problems/projects that require exercise of judgment and understanding of technical issues across multiple organizations
– Make innovative and ingenious contributions to new product design and implementation, based on understanding of applicable technology and how it can be applied to product design, considerations of system-wide impact, hardware-software tradeoffs, and business issues
– A willingness to work on additional tasks and responsibilities that will positively contribute towards team, department, and company goals
Job Requirements Requirements:
This position requires in-depth knowledge of operating system internals in general. Proficiency in C and C++, excellent debugging skills are required.
Must have full command of sound software engineering practices and a passion for quality.
Must have a proven record of meeting extremely tight deadlines with quality.
Strong communication skills are essential, both written and oral, targeted at a wide variety of internal and external audiences. We value independence, drive, motivation, flexibility, and cooperative spirit.
Education and Experience Education & Experience:
– A minimum of 15 years of experience is required
– A Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, a Master Degree, or a PhD; or equivalent experience is required
– Has the experience to assess the feasibility of providing solutions to complex problems given time, budget, and resource constraints
– Demonstrated ability to have completed multiple, complex technical projects
– Demonstrated ability to provide technical advice, leadership, and direction to more junior engineers
